Types of WGs
Purpose WG: Everyone does their own thing, shares only bathroom and kitchen. Plus WG: Joint activities, dinners, real community. Student WG: Young, cheap, changing. Professional WG: Older roommates, quieter, more stable. Think about what suits you.
Where to search?
WG-Gesucht.de is the standard. eBay Kleinanzeigen also has listings. Facebook groups ('WG Zimmer [City]') are increasingly important. University bulletin boards (physical or digital). Word of mouth - tell everyone you're looking.
The WG casting
WG castings are like dates. You get invited, meet the roommates, they decide afterward. Be yourself but interested. Ask about daily life, cleaning schedule, visitors, noise levels. Show that you fit in, not that you're perfect.
Legal aspects in WGs
Main tenant vs. sub-tenant is crucial. As sub-tenant you have fewer rights and the main tenant can terminate you. Better: Everyone on the lease or a WG lease with individual contracts. Clarify who's liable for damages.
Registration in a WG
You need a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from the main tenant (not the landlord!). The main tenant can sign this as 'housing provider'. Some landlords prohibit subletting - then registration is problematic.
