Terminating old apartment
In writing by registered mail, by month's end, observe notice period (usually 3 months). Alternative: Find replacement tenant - but only if landlord agrees. Schedule handover appointment early.
3 months before
Set moving date, plan vacation days. Request moving company quotes or organize helpers. Schedule bulky waste pickup. Start decluttering - the less you take, the cheaper.
1 month before
Mail forwarding at post office (online, €28). Register electricity/gas for new apartment. Order internet move (takes time!). Get moving boxes. Tools for furniture disassembly.
1 week before
Pack and label boxes. Defrost fridge. Disassemble furniture. Reduce last shopping. Keep important documents handy. Apply for no-parking zone for van if needed.
After the move
Register at citizens office within 14 days (fine!). You need landlord confirmation for this. Change address: Bank, insurance, employer, Amazon, etc. Cancel/transfer GEZ.
